A JOBSPARK EXPLORATION GUIDE

Career Exploration for Parents: Encourage Curiosity Without Pressure

A child’s interests are invitations to explore. They are not a prediction of a future profession. Start with curiosity and keep conversations open.

Ask about activities they enjoy

Instead of asking for a career choice, try “What did you enjoy making this week?” or “Which question would you like to find out more about?” Listen for patterns without turning them into expectations.

Make different kinds of work visible

Talk about the people behind everyday things: who grows food, designs a playground, repairs a bicycle, creates a game or supports a patient? Include practical trades, care work, creative roles and research.

Support a small experiment

Let your child choose an activity. Gather safe materials, help where needed, and let them make decisions. The goal is a useful experience, not a perfect result.

Reflect without ranking

Ask what they noticed and what they would change next time. Avoid comparing them with siblings or suggesting that a difficult first attempt rules out a field.

Check real pathways when the time comes

When your child gets closer to subject or course choices, check current local qualification requirements with a school counsellor and official education providers.
