A JOBSPARK EXPLORATION GUIDE

How to Explore Careers While You’re Still at School

You don’t need a final answer to “what do you want to be?” School is a good time to discover the kinds of questions, activities and people that interest you.

Start with an interest, not a job title

Think about what you choose to do when nobody is grading you. Do you sketch, fix things, explain ideas, care for animals or organize games? These are useful starting points, not labels you have to keep.

Explore three different fields

Choose one career that sounds familiar, one that connects to a favourite subject, and one that surprises you. Read about their everyday work. A job title can sound exciting while the daily activities tell a different story.

Try the work in miniature

Download a career activity and spend a short session trying it. You might design a model, observe plants, write a story or make a simple poster. Ask an adult to help and follow the safety notes.

Reflect on the experience

Write down what you enjoyed, what felt difficult, and what you want to understand better. Difficulty does not mean a career is wrong for you. It can show a skill you have not practised yet.

Talk to someone and revisit

Ask a teacher, family member or professional what the work is like. Your interests will change as you experience more. Keep your options open and explore again later.
